Pages
The editor is where you build a page out of blocks. What you see on the canvas is what visitors get. This page covers adding, editing, moving and removing blocks, checking other screen sizes, and how your work is saved.
In Pages, click a page's title or its Edit link. The editor fills the screen:
The Settings tab holds the page's own details: its title, address, place in the menu, and its search and sharing settings. See Pages and addresses and Search engines and sharing.
A selected block: its name bar on the canvas, its settings on the right.
While you drag, a green line shows where the block will land, and a green ring shows which box it's going into. Red means it can't go there. Empty layout blocks such as a Section or a grid cell show a dashed Drop blocks here box to aim at.
The list stays open while you work. Close it with its X, by pressing Escape, or by clicking + again.
Not sure which block to use? Every block, explained describes them all.
Click a block to select it. Heading, Text and Rich Text blocks, and the cells of a Table, are edited by typing straight onto the page. For a Rich Text block, the bold, italic, list, link and colour buttons appear in the Formatting box of the panel on the right.
Everything else about a block is in the panel on the right: a button's Label and Link (href), a picture's Image source and Alt text, sizes, colours, alignment and so on. Changes show on the canvas as you make them.
At the bottom of the panel, every block also has:
Hover over a block and a small name bar appears above it. Dashed outlines show the boxes it sits inside. Blocks nested deep inside others can be easier to pick from Layers in the right-hand panel: click any row to select that block.
To move a block, drag it by its name bar and drop it where the green line shows.
The ⋮ button at the right of the name bar (Block actions) opens a menu:
You can also delete the selected block with the Delete button at the top of the right-hand panel. On an empty page, a Paste a block here button appears when you have something copied.
The Block actions menu.
The two arrow buttons beside + undo and redo your last changes to the page. You can also press Ctrl+Z to undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo (on a Mac, Cmd+Z and Cmd+Shift+Z). While you're typing inside a block, those keys undo your typing instead.
Undo only remembers what you've done since you opened the page. Once you reload or leave, you can't undo earlier changes. To go back further, use the page's version history.
The four buttons at the top right of the canvas show the page as a real screen draws it: Phone, Tablet, Laptop and Desktop. This is not just a narrower window. Columns stack and menus fold up exactly as they will on that device. Everything stays editable on every view.
The figure beside the buttons, for example 1440 · 62%, is the width being shown and how much it has been shrunk to fit your screen. The editor remembers your choice for next time.
There is no Save button. The editor saves your work about a second after you stop changing things. The top bar shows Saving…, then Saved with the time. If you close the tab or move away in the middle of an edit, Cairn tries to send that last change on its way out, but it's safest to wait for Saved first.
Saving keeps your work safe, but it doesn't put it on the live site. Visitors see the page as it was when you last pressed Publish. See Publishing, drafts and history.
If the save status turns red with a warning, your last change wasn't saved. Read the message, fix what it says, and the next change will save again.
